A Strategic Approach to Enviromental Compliance
RoHS, WEEE, REACH, EUP, SB20/SB50, China-RoHS. Does this acronym jungle represent multiple layers of expense and business disruption to achieve nebulous goals, or does this present a golden opportunity to leapfrog your competition and achieve solid gains to your bottom line?
The Business Process: Assessing and Maintaining Compliance
Your products have attained RoHS Compliance, now what does your company need to do to maintain compliance and to demonstrate it to both customers and government enforcement authorities? RoHS compliance is not a static one-time event. Every major organization within your company must review their operation to insure that what is in place has and will continue to evolve to meet the requirements. This requirement extends to your supply base as well. The result of your efforts will be the ability to consistently design, build, and ship RoHS compliant products.
The European Union’s RoHS directive cost the electronics industry billions of dollars to comply with, yet it only phased out six classes of substances. There are thousands of substances used in electronic products, many of which are toxic to people and/or the environment during one or more phases of their lifecycle. The next major piece of chemical regulation that will impact nearly all industry, not just electronics, also comes from Europe and is expected to become law late this year or early next and implemented over the next several years. It may impact as many as 30,000 substances and could result in the restriction of hundreds of those for certain uses. This legislation is called REACH, or Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemical Substances. It places much of the burden of proving that chemicals can be used safely on industry, rather than regulators. You will learn what this regulation is and what you must start to do today in order to limit its potential negative impact on your company and even gain strategic advantage.
