The European Union’s RoHS directive cost the electronics industry billions of dollars to comply with, yet it only phased out six classes of substances. There are thousands of substances used in electronic products, many of which are toxic to people and/or the environment during one or more phases of their lifecycle. The next major piece of chemical regulation that will impact nearly all industry, not just electronics, also comes from Europe and is expected to become law late this year or early next and implemented over the next several years. It may impact as many as 30,000 substances and could result in the restriction of hundreds of those for certain uses. This legislation is called REACH, or Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemical Substances. It places much of the burden of proving that chemicals can be used safely on industry, rather than regulators. You will learn what this regulation is and what you must start to do today in order to limit its potential negative impact on your company and even gain strategic advantage.
Speaking about REACH will be Robert Donkers, one of the co-authors of the REACH proposal. Since October 2003, he is Environment Counselor at the Delegation of the European Commission to the US and stationed in Washington D.C.
