Question:  We have been conducting operator training for both J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610 to the Revision D documents. Can you tell me when the training materials will be available for Revision E and if I have to retrain everyone to the new revision?

Answer:  There are really two parts to address this question, one is the timeframe for materials and the other is the concept behind the actual certification.

The J-STD-001 Instructor Certification training materials are now available to Revision E. The recertification materials are not yet out for J-STD-001. The training materials for IPC-A-610 Revision E are forthcoming and we will let you know as soon as they become available.

With all this in mind, the training materials are designed for the specific revision in question, but the actual certification is not revision specific. If you train to Revision D in this example, you do not have to go back and train to Revision E when it comes out. The existing certifications are still valid. You may have an interest in holding a course highlighting the changes, but by no means are you required to recertify everyone that has a valid certificate (has not expired) every time a revision is updated. This is what is meant when someone says that IPC certifications are not revision specific.
