The Top 3 Technologies that will Change the Electronics Manufacturing Industry

Posted on 26st April, 2018 by Leo Lambert

As many manufacturers continue placing increased emphasis on utilizing smart technology in their processes, there is a new design opportunity for electronics manufacturers. The industry itself has undergone recent technological developments in IoT that have transformed production processes to improve efficiency. One executive has even dubbed this time a “technological renaissance,” given the progress that has been made and capabilities that are now publicly available.

Here are three technologies that are expected to impact manufacturing production and processes.

1.) Advanced Robots

In today’s age of automation, it’s not uncommon to find advanced robots working alongside humans in the manufacturing space. In 2017, there was an estimated 1.8 million active robots in production roles. Where they were once responsible for only 10% of production, these advanced robots are projected to be responsible for 25-45% by 2030. In electronics manufacturing, robots are being leveraged in some assembly situations to accommodate an increased electrical demand for smaller products, given their ability to execute precise actions. It will be interesting to see how electronics manufacturers either utilize this new tech in concert with trained technicians, or, seize the opportunity to design and build the robots themselves.

2.) Artificial Intelligence

Just as IoT continues to increase machine and device connectivity, it also enables artificial intelligence (AI) to continue growing, revolutionizing the way machines communicate and function. AI allows robots to adapt and “learn” based on variant situations. Amazon, for example, utilizes AI to optimize its internal robot fulfillment system in its factories. Some manufacturing companies are already harnessing the computing power of AI to improve production schedules and enhance their machine processing capabilities.

It should be noted that the study referenced above has projected that companies that implement advanced robotics and AI systems can improve industrial productivity by over 30% and reduce labor costs by 18-33%. By 2025, the additional savings and increased output are estimated to be worth between $600 billion and $1.2 trillion.

3.) Predictive Maintenance

Given developments in IoT and the strides being made in AI, another technology poised to revolutionize manufacturing is predictive maintenance solutions. In the production landscape, most machines involved in the line are outdated and have a greater chance of failing. In a time-stressed industry, production halts greatly affect the bottom line. For example, in the automotive industry, machine failures can cost a company over $1.3 million dollars. While most responses to breakdowns have been reactive, predictive maintenance solutions allow for proactive action. Through the power of IoT, AI, and emphasis on wireless sensors, users are able to monitor the performance of their machines and more accurately predict and prevent breakdowns. Predictive maintenance solutions allow for peak operation and production, saving users a significant amount of money and headaches.

From a production standpoint, it’s clear that these new technologies will be highly demanded as manufacturers look to increase their operational efficiency. This new demand presents a unique opportunity for electronics manufacturers as these new technologies scale exponentially. It will be crucial that you ensure your employees have all necessary certifications to appeal to innovators that’ll likely outsource such complex design work.
